But I think we can all agree that California is resisting that evil better than most states. Democracy is in its DNA.

I suspect a lot of what is hurting the wharf is our Nazi immigration policy. No immigrants to work = no stores open.

Sadly this shows people just do not have disposable income.

BUT I can tell you all those retail stores around SF Fisherman’s Whatf
were OVERBUILT.

I was there even BEFORE PIER 39 was built.

And since that time a lot of Fisherman’s Wharf retail areas
expanded beyond what it could support.

Sadly though Alioto’s was a KEY tenant, and that triggered
a chain reaction downward spiral, Pandemic hurt area,
Too many tourists stopped coming to spend money,
More and more tourists just do NOT buy from retail stores there.

I NEVER went to SF fisherman’s wharf,,,
That’s for the tourists.

Alito’s closing was so heart breaking. My Grandfather used to say it was the only restaurant in the 20’s and 30’s that served minorities. And I loved the Tarantinos upstairs dining and views. That said Pier 39 is thriving and that giant Ferris wheel lawns has a line !

I have been visiting for 65 years as a long time Bay Area restaurant. A great aunt and uncle used to take us to Alioto’s for special occasions. More times I ate crab or shrimp cocktails from the outside vendors. As a young teen, I took a bus and cable car there with my best friend to Christmas shop. I even worked for awhile at a souvenir shop. So many memories and good times.

about 100 miles and several counties south of SF. It died in the 1950s as a result of overfishing. It was being converted into a tourist trap about the time I moved here in the 70s. There’s a nice walking trail along the shoreline from downtown Monterey to Pacific Grove and the aquarium (do NOT go when the schools are out) but the area is mostly shops selling trash and mediocre food. The views are free, though, and you can see harbor seals and sea otters. Monterey has its own Fisherman’s Wharf that’s like SF’s was decades ago, and an actual working wharf where actual fishers bring their catch.

I LIVE AND WORKED at fisherman's Wharf at what used to be an ART gallery by the cable car turn around, I know the places he has gone to and believe me I know TRUMP is making it nearly impossible for TOURISTS to want to come to the city, not to mention FOX NEWS SHOWING stores and cars being broken into, Even if the crime has subsided, PEOPLE STILL DO not want to come to the city, We had many Candian visitors as well as people from Asia and Europe. TRUMP IS TURNING this country into a shit hole country and since tourism drives the city, its way down ... the prices here are still expensive and when the TARRIFFS go into effect , it will kill a lot of business...

The guy who made this video is obsessed with making misleading or outright fake videos like this. Some of his recent titles:

Berkeley is now a TOTAL ghost town
San Jose is now completely DESOLATED
downtown Portland EMPTY everyone left…
every store is CLOSED in HOLLYWOOD
every restaurant is CLOSED in San Francisco
every store is CLOSED in Sacramento
every store is CLOSED in Oakland
Every hotel is CLOSING in San Francisco downtown

I'm not sure what his agenda is, but I can assure you that none of those video titles are remotely close to being true representations of reality. It's all BULLSHIT!

Attributed to Yogi Berra. Now, I haven't gone to San Francisco as much as I used to before the pandemic, but when I was in Golden Gate Park a week ago it seemed full of people. We had lunch at a very crowded restaurant a short walk from the park, and noticed a new Chinese place I'd like to try next time I'm in the neighborhood.

Was there the first time as a little kid in 1965.
My dad took 2 weeks of vacation and drove to SF for a couple days, then drove PCH to the LA area where my dad had a bunch of relatives.
We drove home the southern route.
We went to Alioto's twice while there (my dad spoke Italian the whole time so we got phenomenal service).
We went back when I was 17 on a travel trailer trip.
I even drove from Stanford to SF a few times while at SRI just to eat at Alioto's.
Very fond memories. Sad to hear it's permanently closed.

I’ve seen PIER 39 built into tourist Mecca.

I’ve seen the once SF wharf of few shops, turn into retail hell.
Full of trinkets stuff.

There at one time was lots of ART work retail stores,
Nicer stores, nicer crowds. and quirky street entertainment
Street entertainment that one really really enjoyed.

The steam of the cooking crab,
The street food, relatively inexpensive.

But then the CRAPPY stuff invaded.
Cheap and cheaper crap being hawked at retail stores,
The McDonalds crowds, not to sit-down nice restaurant types.
Too many shitty cheap restaurants
But still Scoma’s SF remained,

Alioto’s demise was the final nail in the street area retail going from
The famous SF Wharf sign, west down to the Maritime Museum.

And the shuttered restaurants and shops on that street ,
Essentially from Boudin SF, down the street to Hyde Street Pier

And the homeless surge.

WELL MAYBE ITS AN EXAGGERATION TO SAY ITS ALL BOARDED UP

There are still retail shops and some restaurants on that street

that my favorite NFL shop was gone, and replaced with a ball cap place, so where was I gonna buy my RAIDER gear? The RAIDERS website, and maybe Amazon. My favorite seafood restaurant at the end of pier thirty nine where I once had a whole lobster and whole Dungeness crab at the same time was totally gone,. Many of the shops have had low business... some have shut down while others try to survive.

IT DOESNT help when FOX news haters, show people breaking into one car after the other to steal stuff, or breaking into stores and smash and grab stuff like jewlry, athletic shoes or clothing.. and just walking out of the stores. ITS gotten beter with the police but all people see is that smash and grab stuff

Trump is not making things any better, becasue he is hating on Canada and Mexico , tourists from there do not come any more, We had many Vancouerites visiting, not any more thanks to TRUMP , and with him deporting people left and right he is killing the tourist business.

wait till his TARRIFFS go into effect, he will really kill businesses than.
