Lost in all of the events of yesterday, the knee jerk U.S. political reactions, the finger pointing and claims of "innocence" or "guilt," was the fact that other countries have been gravely affected by a provocative, threatening and irresponsible foreign policy effectuated by Iran that has gone on for decades - resulting in the deaths of God only knows how many tens of thousands of innocent lives throughout the world. Case in point - Iran's decision to provide thousands of drones and hundreds of missiles to Russia for use against Ukraine.
What was the point of Iran aiding in the destruction of Ukraine? Ukraine is a democratic state fighting to repel an invasion against it begun by a cruel and autocratic despot in Russia. Iran had no dog in this fight. Despite this fact, Iran intentionally injected itself into the equation, tilting the arms scale in favor of Russia at a critical time when Putin was - due to the rest of the world's sanctions against him - actually losing his war against Ukraine. Repeatedly embarrassed on the battlefield, Putin turned to Iran for military assistance and Iran complied.
It is one thing to stand on the sidelines and observe one party inflict harm upon another. The image of school children encircling a schoolyard bully and his victim comes to mind. The failure to act against a bully can be rationalized for any number of reasons, including fear of repercussions. It is another thing altogether to join with the bully against his victim. How is that choice rationalized? How can Iran's participation in the attempted annihilation of Ukraine and its people not be considered when judging Iran's "innocence" or "guilt?"
As always, from the outset of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, I stand with Ukraine - and against any nation that would deny it democracy.

(15,782 posts)that being said, I can imagine that the majority of countries, especially in the ME, are breathing a sigh of relief that Iran's nuclear weapons program has been, IMO, severely damaged, nobody, especially the ME countries, want a nuclear armed Iran, that would be a disaster of magnitude proportions.

If you fear US attacks, you appease Russia. It isn't hard to figure out.

(19,299 posts)Because of their hatred for Zelensky and Ukraine. Most people here who oppose trumps actions oppose them for different reasons. This one is just pissed it might disrupt the supply of weapons to Russia.

(434 posts)They have one nuclear power plant. It uses 3.5 -5% uranium. Largely supplied by Russia. Their enrichment program increased the stockpile of 60% uranium by 25% in just 4 months from Q4 to Q1 of this year.
China went from a stockpile of highly enriched uranium (90%+) to a nuclear weapon in under 5 weeks.
Its not a big technology jump to go from 60% to 90%. And then quickly to a weapon. This is with a government that has no reason to be enriching to the extent they already do outside of weapon development.
I dont see how Israel is suppose to just wait until its too late to act. In the name of self preservation.
