There is no intel, says one of the officials, who were granted anonymity to discuss sensitive matters. Nothing new, that Im aware of The president is protecting the United States and our interests, [but] the intelligence assessments have not really changed from what they were before. Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), who sits on the Foreign Relations Committee, confirmed Saturday night that American intelligence assessments on Iran have not changed. I was briefed on the intelligence last week. Iran posed no imminent threat of attack to the United States, he wrote on social media. Iran was not close to building a deliverable nuclear weapon.
White House spokesperson Anna Kelly says, This is false and lazy reporting designed to undermine President Trumps highly successful operation to dismantle Irans nuclear capabilities.
Trumps attacks on Iran constitute an act of war and could set off a new, long-term conflict with potential to grow into something much larger. Unlike a previous time an American president preemptively initiated a war in the Middle East, when George W. Bush plunged America into a disastrous war in Iraq, he and his team spent roughly a year building a case of lies and propaganda to sell to a public that was already broadly supportive of post-9/11 military action.

(5,691 posts)I ask again, why then is Iran enriching uranium (to 60%) far beyond that required for use in a nuclear reactor (5%) or production of medical isotopes(around 20%)??
One rational I've heard is that it "gives them political leverage" but that seems v weak as it appearss to have done nothing of the sort and in fact the opposite. I can come up with nothing plausible other than to build a bomb or be very close at some future date.

(50,407 posts)and Trump's gut is really unreliable.
Meanwhile, Bibi was probably whispering to him behind the scenes, "Just say 'Iran is on the verge of building a nuclear weapon in the next few weeks'. Hey Donald, I've been using that one for over two decades and it STILL sells." Besides once it is determined not to be true, it is too late. The deed is done and people have already forgotten the justification for the bombings.

(11,753 posts)The text, seen by Reuters, declares Iran in breach of its obligations given a damning report the IAEA sent to member states on May 31.
"The Board of Governors... finds that Iran's many failures to uphold its obligations since 2019 to provide the Agency with full and timely cooperation regarding undeclared nuclear material and activities at multiple undeclared locations in Iran ... constitutes non-compliance with its obligations under its Safeguards Agreement with the Agency," the text said.

(14,621 posts)The 2015 agreement, which was negotiated by the Obama administration and included Germany, France and Britain, had lifted most U.S. and international economic sanctions against Iran. In exchange, Iran agreed to restrictions on its nuclear program, making it impossible to produce a bomb and establishing rigorous inspections.
From 2020:
May 8 marked two years since President Trump formally withdrew from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), better known as the Iran nuclear deal, while maintaining that "it is the policy of the United States that Iran be denied a nuclear weapon and intercontinental ballistic missiles. Since then, the Trump Administration unilaterally re-imposed crippling sanctions on Iran and antagonized our allies by forcing them to comply or risk financial isolation. They have also wasted valuable time trying to disassemble the Iran nuclear deal rather than pursuing negotiations to address its concerns. Now, the United States is scrambling to respond to the impending end of a United Nations (UN) arms embargo linked to the nuclear deal.
This is just another distraction to reclaim the limelight.
Bibi was getting too much media attention, what with his bombing Iran and getting totally slammed in return fire. Trump can't stand that.

Iran was pissed off. For 3 years they cooperated, complied, bent over backwards and with no warning Trump hit them between the eyes. The sanctions wreaked havoc on their economy and people.
