More patients may die as a result of plans drawn up by the Trump administration to cut billions of dollars from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), veteran federal government workers and experts have warned.
Nearly $2.7bn would be cut from the agency, which is the largest funder of cancer research in the world a decline of 37.2% from the previous year under a budget proposal for 2026, in the latest effort to cut staff and funding.
These cuts are absolutely gut wrenching, Erin Lavik, former deputy director and chief technology officer at the NCIs division of cancer prevention, told the Guardian.
Lavik was fired along with a swath of probationary workers at the institute in February; put on administrative leave in response to a judges ruling to halt the firings in March; and then terminated again in April.

(127,111 posts)it costs money to Medicare, Social Security and Medicaid. I guess that is what MAGA/Republicans means by "cutting the fat".

Money and power have always gotten them out of every spot of trouble.
Reality may hit them one day.

(880 posts)I am a lymphoma survivor.
I was first diagnosed in 1990.
I have been living with lymphoma for 35 years.
However, this administration will make it more difficult.
The problem with my cancer is that it transforms every time it returns.
It gets more aggressive and not the same place and previous therapies do not work.
First time, it was follicular lymphoma.
When it returned in 2002, it was as diffuse large B-Cell lymphoma (DLBCL); That time in my left femur.
When it returned in 2019, it was DLBCL; that time near my spinal column.
I was able to beat it this time based on three factors.
Trump's ACA repeal failed; 4 treatments over 2 years failed. ACA protects me against lifetime limits.
A new drug worked that was approved by FDA in 2020.
My provider successfully appealed denial of drug by my healthcare insurer.
So cancer research saved my life.
I have family members that are MAGA that defend Trump.
Trump is a horrible human being.
Trump was already ranked worst president for his first term.
He could have pursued a new legacy in cancer cures; but he has decided to take a different route.
There are promising cures using mRNA vaccines in cancer treatment.
But his administration distrusts mRNA vaccines and science.

(5,572 posts)another blood cancer - multiple myeloma - on drugs which have made an enormous difference in our survival rate with this incurable cancer. Am almost 10 years in with each relapse becoming trickier. Without the advances I wouldnt be typing this.

(880 posts)I understand.
I am on maintenance; have infusions every 3 weeks.
Now my doctor says if I stopped the maintenance, it could return.
The other drugs that I tried had a limit number of treatments but they failed.

When we are finished with these authoritarian criminals, we will build back with stronger protections for justice, equity, and freedom.

Without research for cancer I don't want to picture what his future would have been. Our family would have been devastated. How can the Republican party be so cruel?

I don't know if this is a result of crazy DOGE cuts or something else, but it is indeed gut-wrenching.
