TRUMP: What?
AMERICA: RELEASE THE EPSTEIN FILES!
TRUMP: Say it?
AMERICA: ð
TRUMP: Oh, the Earhart files!
If I was Donald Trump I would not be drawing the publicâs attention right now to my ability to release files

(6,644 posts)2) Trump read a big boy book about Amelia Earhart when he was first learning how to read, didn't he?
3) Wait, is there a right wing conspiracy about Amelia Earhart? What in the hell?
4) Usually, a competent observer can piece together the strands of intention and silliness that lead to some Trumpian proclamation, but I gotta say, this one is an ... enduring mystery...like Amela Earhart....

(43,094 posts)I dunno whether it's right- or left-wing, but it's been around since at least 1943, when the B-movie Flight for Freedom was released. It stars Rosalind Russell as "Tonie Carter," who's Not At All Related in Any Way to Amelia Earhart, abd Fred McMurray as "Randy Britton," who's Nothing At All like her Alcoholic Navigator Fred Noonan on her Final Flight.
Set in 1940, the film has Carter/Earhart called to a top-secret Pentagon meeting before her around-the-world flight attempt. She's asked in the meeting to fake being lost near "Gull Island," where she can secretly land and wait to be rescued by the Navy, which has stocked the island with survival gear and food.
The strategy is, the Japanese wouldn't dare try to stop the Navy from searching for the world-famous aviator, which would allow searching every island in the vicinity and thereby gather a whole bunch of intel on Japanese military locations and strength.
There's a twist at the end, but I ain't sayin' nothin'.

(21,203 posts)One, as you pointed out, was that Earhart was spying on the Japanese on behalf of the U.S. government. A lot of books all but came out and said it directly, I think one of them was The Search For Amelia Earhart (1966).
Another wild theory was that Earhart faked her disappearance, and was still alive in the USA under an alias in the 1960's. Amelia Earhart Lives (1970) was a big proponent of that theory.

(128,036 posts)Her disappearance has been extensively researched ever since, and while no final conclusions have been reached, most historians think she crashed in the ocean. There will always be conspiracy theories about everything, but AFAIK Earharts's disappearance isn't a controversy any more, just a curiosity.
And what about Jimmy Hoffa and Judge Crater? Was Lizzie Borden really innocent?
The Epstein files, on the other hand....

(21,203 posts)The most prevailing theory now is that she landed safely on an uninhabited atoll, but the plane was washed out to sea and she perished from starvation within a few weeks.
There were human bones found on the island in question, and remains of a campfire that was dated around 1937. The bones were shipped to a lab, but they were lost sometime before 1991. They had taken measurements of the bones, and those measurements are a possible match to Earhart's size based on photos of her.
This organization has searched the island, but so far has not produced anything conclusive.

(128,036 posts)of whether there are still unreleased files about Earhart in the first place and if so, why Trump is releasing them now. What it does suggest that he can release whatever he wants if he wants to do it. So where are the Epstein files?

(128,036 posts)What's clear is that she got lost and crashed, either on an island or in the ocean. Everyone associated with her flight is long dead, and while some historians and aviation buffs would like a definitive answer, it's not of great interest to anybody else.

(8,443 posts)Very few Americans who were alive when she disappeared are still alive today.
But the overwhelming majority of Americans were were alive when Jeffery Epstein died are still alive today.
One thing we do know is that Amelia Earhart never visited Epstein's island.
