Hey, nurse here
Nancy Mace went on TV and told pregnant people not to take Tylenol and to take ibuprofen instead.
And, I cannot stress enough, HOW STUPID THAT IS. Ibuprofen is PROVEN to cause fetal complications. Has been for years. TYLENOL HAS NOT. EVER.
DO NOT TAKE MEDICAL ADVICE FROM THESE IDIOTS. LISTEN. TO. YOUR. DOCTOR.

Im a board-certified internist and Ive given up trying to give medical advice to MAGA. Whats the point? You try to help them and all they do is insult you. Let them drink bleach.

(3,090 posts)...one of their inscrutable alt-right conspiracy theories? I can't keep up--one minute they're foaming at the mouth about Pizzagate, and the next they're telling me (against my own medical advisers!) to clog my arteries with beef tallow and coconut oil because "seed oils are evil!!!!11!!!1!!!". Somehow I missed the boat on how Tylenol became the latest bête noire.

(8,845 posts)heart palps and anxiety that Tylenol never did to me. Unfortunately, this was after telling my shoulder surgeon that I can't take opioids. He had me on high doses of ibuprofen and I didn't sleep at all until I got out of the hospital and got home. I took Tylenol until I recovered.

(39,025 posts)Regular, plain old, no-brand aspirin works fine for me.
There's no danger in aspirin, however I am careful to never take it on an empty stomach. There are some things that aspirin won't help with, for example a sinus headache won't go away with aspirin. (But Tylenol doesn't help with that either.)

(7,701 posts)Aspirin can pose serious dangers, including an increased risk of gastrointestinal bleeding, stomach ulcers, and hemorrhagic stroke. The risk of these complications varies based on dosage, other medications, and individual health factors. Aspirin is especially dangerous for children and teenagers due to the risk of Reye's syndrome.
Aspirin can irritate the stomach lining and cause ulcers and bleeding in the stomach or intestines. This risk increases with higher doses, long-term use, and older age. The risk of internal bleeding is heightened when aspirin is combined with alcohol or other blood-thinning medications.
While aspirin is used to prevent clot-related strokes, its blood-thinning effect increases the risk of a hemorrhagic stroke, which is caused by bleeding in the brain.
Long-term or heavy aspirin use can affect kidney function and potentially lead to kidney failure.
Ringing in the ears (tinnitus) is another reported side effect.

(12,120 posts)There were a number of pre-discharge little seminars we were highly urged to take, and one was a discussion about pain management. The pharmacist leading this particular meeting told us to go home, grab our bottle of ibuprofen and throw it in the garbage. Amazingly - or not - acet. was the preferred course.
As you might imagine, I'm still on the fence; weighing the opinions of highly-educated healers against that of a RW loon with a degree in journalism.

(777 posts)Generally, pregnant women should avoid taking ibuprofen, especially in the later stages of pregnancy. Here's why:
First trimester: Some studies suggest a possible link between ibuprofen use and miscarriage or birth defects, though the evidence isn't conclusive.
Second trimester: Occasional use may be less risky, but it should only be taken if a doctor specifically recommends it.
Third trimester: Ibuprofen can cause serious complications, such as premature closure of a fetal heart vessel (the ductus arteriosus), reduced amniotic fluid, and kidney problems in the baby.
Safer alternative: Acetaminophen (Tylenol / paracetamol) is generally considered safer for pain relief during pregnancy, but even that should be used in the lowest effective dose for the
