CBS News fired 8 on-air personalities in latest layoffs under new leader Bari Weiss. All of them are women

"...a male correspondent was initially included on the layoff list but was removed after he appealed directly to the new editor-in-chief, Bari Weiss, leading to another female correspondent being added to the list at the last minute."

Matt Novak (@paleofuture.bsky.social) 2025-10-30T21:54:57.802Z

After weeks of nerve-racking anticipation, Paramount finally followed through with its “tough day” of layoffs, which included letting roughly 100 CBS News employees go on Wednesday. All told, the sweeping cuts resulted in the loss of two streaming shows, the gutting of the network’s Saturday morning news program, and the disbanding of its race and culture unit.

On top of that, eight on-air correspondents and hosts were given their pink slips – and all of them are women, with half of them people of color.

According to three sources with knowledge of the situation, a male correspondent was initially included on the layoff list but was removed after he appealed directly to the new editor-in-chief, Bari Weiss, leading to another female correspondent being added to the list at the last minute.

snip

While the layoffs have been anticipated since chairman David Ellison took over Paramount in August following its politically fraught merger with Skydance Media, they also take place after Ellison promised the Trump administration that he’d eliminate diversity, equity and inclusion policies once he took over the company.

... after 11 September 2001.

I've been boycotting all advertising supported television since January 2012.

Whatever people say about Walter Cronkite or Sixty Minutes I think television news and opinion in the U.S.A. has always been corrupt to some extent. It started to go truly rotten with Ronald Reagan.

Beyond the news, I subscribed to Paramount streaming long enough to watch two seasons of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds but I didn't find enough there to interest me, in either Strange New Worlds or Paramount in general to justify the cost. If I need a Star Trek fix there are still dozens of Star Trek novels on my bookshelf I haven't read yet.

My take on "traditional" television is rather harsh: Traditional television made Trump, Traditional television must die. I'm a pacifist so my only recourse, or nearly so, is to encourage people to abandon it.

I seem to be a happier person without television and have similar feelings about "social media." DU is my only social media.

Maybe boycotts will convince CBS to offer something more than token resistance to the fascists. But at this point, reduced to being little more than a brand name trading hands, the world might still be a better place if they simply withered away.

I agreed with some stuff she said and disagreed with others. But that was normal levels of discourse. If I remember correctly she is from Pittsburgh and the Tree of Life was her synagogue growing up.

But know it seems like she realized she can cash in after drinking the maga cool aid.

As a fellow Jew I find people like her disgusting.

A sad end to the heritage of Murrow and Cronkite.

I wonder how much of Sixty Minutes will remain.

to ruin a Democrat in the White House, even if it means they’ll eventually be hurt, too.

Sometimes, I swear, I don’t understand the Republicans. I don’t know how they willingly make life harder for those different from themselves. I just don’t get that one.

That said, I can’t see myself EVER becoming convinced that the Republican way is THE way to go. There’s too much wrong with it, and just too damn much I can’t agree with.
