Today I did something I cannot remember doing before, I got money out of the ATM and put it in the freezer. I bought a few extra groceries for the pantry, extra pet food too.
I feel like one of those nuts who order doomsday kits online. Have I lost my mind?

But remember - if you freeze your money, it'll lose liquidity.

(12,848 posts)I remember that is what my Mom did during the Cuban Missile Crisis. I was a little girl, but smart enough to realize things were not normal. My Dad filling the root cellar with food, water and blankets was the first clue.
Thanks though...

(3,592 posts)First day of college was 9/11, NYU. Got covered in the concrete dust and presumably dead people ash.
During Covid, when they announced the NYC subway was shutting down at night I remember thinking to myself "The city that never sleeps is going to sleep".
We're all emotional creatures that have been primed for years for this. We aren't crazy, we are responding to stress in different ways.
You deserve the right to feel crazy. I find it quite liberating.
If you were investing in bitcoin then I'd unironically call you a crazy person.

(7,800 posts)but the anger is dangerous in itself... drives my BP skyward and my nerves are totally fried. I stayed in bed most of today with the covers up to my head. Don't do that very often, but retirement has its advantages. Doesn't help that my torn-up knee has been given me fits all day. Just seemed a perfect day to let the world go do its thing while I laid low for once.

"Do not be afraid. Gospel of Matthew, 14:27 and 17: 7
I suppose that a lot of people have a favorite gospel. Mine would be Matthew's, the first found in the Good Book. There was a time when scholars believed it was the first of the four written, although for the last 126 years, it is known it was actually done post-Mark. Indeed, it is similar to Mark's in many ways, yet it has additions believed to be from the source(s) known as Q.
Q is, of course, the shortened version of the German word Quelle, meaning source. Most, though certainly not all, of bibical historians consider Q to have been both the oral and written sayings of Jesus that were used as teaching devices by the Jewish people for the first generation likely two after Jesus's death. The actual authors of the four gospels especially Matthew and Luke used Q's sayings in making what appears to be a three-layered final product, named after the disciple it was written in the spirit of.
The Gospel of Matthew defines Jesus as being 100% Jewish, delivering a message specific to Jews. To be properly understood, one must have an understanding of the context in which it was authored, and more importantly, the time that Jesus walked the earth. There was tensions between different sects of the Jewish people over how they would exist under Roman rule. Not surprisingly, many among the established leadership were quite comfortable, being in a position not that different than the shysters running mega-churches today.
Others, especially those from the rural regions of Palestine, were fundamentalist in their religious lives. Some extremely so, such as Jesus's second cousin, John the Baptist. A good recently published book, Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth, by Reza Aslan, provides an accurate description of those times. (Note: There are several points that I would debate Aslan on, however.)
During Jesus's life and for the early years after his death, no one who had been alive with him thought that he created a new religion, or Christianity. They understood his message to have been as advocating for the sects of Jews in his time, though lifting it to higher ground. That is, the mountaintop of humanity. What I find fascinating is that in Matthew we find sixteen quotes that are, if anything, Buddhist in nature. One that comes to mind today is, Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. I'm thinking globally here, in terms of tensions that scare normal, sane human beings.
Do not worry. Gospel of Matthew, 6:25

(79,089 posts)I have been talking with a whole lot of family, friends, & associates who are very anxious today. This is a very tough time, and surely more tense than anything since the Cuban missile crisis. And that scares good people -- unlike maga people thinking this is a good thing. I suspect many of them will be on their lawns partying tonight, hoping to see the fireworks.
Nothing "good" can happen in the next 92 hours. The best we can hope for is that the convicted sex offender/felon backs down on his deadline.

I was 12 when the Cuban Missile Crisis happened and this mess is bringing back all those childhood fears, as I'm sure many are feeling the same.

(1,642 posts)Beyond some indistinct point it becomes paranoia. IOW, if you keep enough cash and supplies on hand for a couple of weeks or months, that's prudence. If you buy 10 years worth of stuff...that may indicate a problem.

Being able to stay home a few weeks while everyone is fighting for resources and going through withdrawal from... everything, is a good plan.

(12,848 posts)My Mom had a huge garden and we canned things at the end of summer. We always had a large freezer full of beef and pork and had chickens for eggs. Dad joked we could live for a year off of what we had put away.
Maybe that is where I get this. I always have enough to live a month or so. My husband was a boy scout so we are always prepared.

Yeah, its gone up 200% or whatever (I don't pay attention to it much), but I just cash out a little when I need it. Don't care, as long as this asshole is near the suitcase I'll keep the gold. Trust me, the amount of money I had was worth less than a 2010 Corolla so I'm still poor as fuck. But like I said, it will stay where its at. Its got a long way to fall before I'd lose. And if it falls that far that quick, it'll still be worth more than cash.

(22,277 posts)Not often I'd guess, thus less chance of it getting moved, forgot where you moved it to, and lost. Plus, in a house fire, what's in your fridge / freezer is likely to survive. Not edible, certainly, but probably not burned to dust either.

(22,277 posts)Making an obsession of it is, as you said, a bit nuts. But being prepared for events with significant probabilities of happening is certainly not. We mainly stock up in the winter. Partially because we don't like going out much when it's near zero and snowy for days, and can both work hybrid when the weather's bad. Mainly due to a 35" one day, very wet and heavy snow we had several decades ago, with power out for a solid week. We decided then to never get caught short again.
So buying a little extra and having some cash on you in case of emergencies isn't nuts. It's wise. Particularly with a madman in the White House.

(3,914 posts)If you have lost your mind, I am stark raving mad.
Over the past 3-4 years I have stockpiled over $15,000 cash in one place, the same amount in another. I had given away my guns to my son but have recently retrieved an AR-15, 12-gauge pump shotgun, and .308 Weatherby sighted in at 300 yards in addition to the .40 calibre pistol I have. This week I'm buying another pistol -- semi-auto, .40-cal, smallest model I can find.
In November 2026 and 2028 I WILL VOTE.

More likely it will be non nuclear missiles fired at Iran's power plants, which will cripple Iran's defense and offense capabilities. Then he will sieze control of Hormuz.

I read to buy extra meds if you take them and a biggie they were just talking about on Turning Points is to get an MRI sooner than later before the price of one sky rockets because a third of worlds helium was produced in Qatar where missile strikes demolished production of helium. It will hurt smaller countries- like Cuba worse than US because we produce helium but it will be more scarce.

(102 posts)millions of peppers in the US. Some with a years supply of food. Months of water with ways to purify water if need be. Most are concerned with an EMP attack where there will be no electricity, phones, TV and just about any electronic device is rendered useless. That includes cars. Anything electronic. About 3-4 adversaries are capable of doing this. Do I think its gonna happen. Most likely not. There is also the possibility of the US invoking marshal law.
I have about 4 months of food. Mostly canned soup, canned meats, rice, pasta and other dried stable foods. I have 20 gallons of water with the ability to disinfect almost an unlimited amount of water. From my roof down spots. And a nearby lake if necessary. Also have a butane single burner stove with enough cans of fuel for about 75 hours. Dozens of candles, 4-5 flashlights with extra batteries and a camping type lantern. With enough batteries for about 40-50 hours. Also have 2 lbs of whole
Coffee beans, a manual grinder, coffee filters for about 100 cups of coffee. Instant coffee. Coffee creamer and freeze dried milk. Hot chocolate, Quaker Oats. Plus more.
