. I respect President Trump, but if he brings 500,000 Chinese students to Florida colleges, I will raise tuition on them to $1,000,000/year, wrote Florida gubernatorial candidate James Fishback.
President Trump promised to bring 500,000 Chinese students to American universities and allow China to own U.S. farmlandleaving the MAGAverse enraged.
But if you dont have those studentsgood students, by the wayif you dont if theyre good and they want to stay in America, we wont give them a green card and things like that, Trump rambled on to Fox Newss Sean Hannity on Friday. Frankly, I think that its good that people come from other countries and they learn our culture, and many of them want to stay here. I think its a good thing. Not everybody agrees with me, and it doesnt sound like a very conservative position. And Im as conservativeIm a conservative guy. Im really a common sense guy, I think, more than a conservative.
Actually, no, those 500,000 students are by law required to act as spies for China. This is the law in China. If removing them sinks some schools, then they deserve to sink, MAGA influencer Robby Starbuck opined. The only Chinese students we should invite are the top 0.001% who we should invite to defect to America. And farmland? Lol. We shouldnt even let a Chinese company visit American farmland let alone own it. No exceptions. I give the Chinese credit, they would NEVER let Americans own their farmland. America First.
Trump says its insulting to tell China their students cant go to our universities, imagine being an American student and receiving a rejection letter while 500,000 Chinese students get in! former MAGA Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene wrote. And NO it is not ok for China to buy our farmland!!! And no thats not common sense!!!

(43,512 posts)Ricketts/Nebraska sponsored a bill last year that would help prevent China or any other country to buy farmland. It was called the AFIDA Improvements Act and it would "equip the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to combat foreign adversaries ownership of American agricultural land." Link.
Look who the sponsors are:
Senators Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), John Fetterman (D-PA), Roger Wicker (R-MS), John Cornyn (R-TX), and Katie Britt (R-AL) are original co-sponsors of this legislation in the Senate. Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE) is leading companion legislation in the House.
To say this will not go over well is putting it mildly.
BTW, I don't think this act has passed yet. It is still in committee, if I'm reading it right.

(346 posts)Hundreds of thousands of Chinese students have been coming to our shores for decades now. Not only are they good students(some of whom stay here inthe US) but they are also profitable ones that help keep our small colleges afloat. Since they aren't in state they pay full tuition. I know of one local community college that established complete dominance in NAIA volleyball back in the '90s and '00s due to the fact they had a direct recruiting pipeline to top notch Chinese student athletes. And no, they weren't required to be spies.
As far as farmland goes, they're not buying up farms directly, they're buying up farming corporations. Frankly all corporate farming needs to go, and I agree with the notion that we need to keep American farmland for Americans. China can't feed itself, which is why they want American farmland. Farm goods are one of the last things we can trade internationally, we shouldn't give that away

Some of tge largest farms in Wisconsin are family controlled corporations. These mega family farms are running the small family farms out of business.
