MI-GOV: Another major labor union Michigan endorses Jocelyn Benson for governor
Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson has won the endorsement of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Michigan, adding another major labor union to her campaign for governor as she works to consolidate support among working-class voters and organized labor.
The union represents more than 66,000 health care workers, janitors, security officers, and other service workers across Michigan.
The endorsement is the latest sign that Benson, a Democrat, is building significant support from labor groups in the race to succeed Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who is term-limited.
“While our members care for the public, we need someone in Lansing to look out for them – to lower their costs, raise their wages, and protect their rights and freedoms,” Charlesetta Wilson, president of SEIU Healthcare Michigan, said in a statement. “We know Jocelyn Benson. We know when she says something, she’ll get it done because she did it as Secretary of State. She has demonstrated that she’ll be a champion for our members and for all Michigan workers — and that’s why we’re proud to endorse her and fight with her as she leads our state into a brighter, more affordable future.”
