'If Russia truly wants peace, it must cease fire immediately' -- Ukraine reacts to Putin's Victory Day truce

Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha reacted on April 28 to Russian President Vladimir Putin's announcement of a so-called "humanitarian" truce on the Victory Day, saying that Russia must immediately cease fire if it wants a truce.
The announcement comes as Moscow continues to reject Kyiv's demand for a full and unconditional ceasefire as the first step toward a broader peace deal.
The ceasefire will be in effect from midnight on May 8 until midnight on May 11, according to the Kremlin's statement.
"If Russia truly wants peace, it must cease fire immediately. Why wait until May 8th? If the fire can be ceased now and since any date for 30 daysso it is real, not just for a parade," Sybiha wrote in a post on X.

Just more blather from Putin. He doesn't want peace. Peace will mean the end of his regime and possibly him. His entire economy is dependent upon the war. Putin put his economy into war footing a while ago. What that means is all money first goes into supplying the war effort. If he stops the war, his economy collapses and there will be regime change in the Kremlin.
The only way to stop the war now is to push Russian troops over to the Russian side of the Ukraine/Russian border.

(7,765 posts)Putin says nothing about what can go on under the cover of the ceasefire, especially under the cover of darkness. That would be a great time to sneak behind the lines of the enemy. And when they trip a land mine, blame the enemy for breaking the ceasefire. To be a true ceasefire they would have to freeze forces on both sides in place.
Zelenskyy is right, too. Why not start the ceasefire at midnight tonight. No reason to wait another 10 days for it to start.
