Russia Responds To US Strikes, Will Hold Direct Talks With Iran

The Russian government on Sunday "strongly condemned" the United States' strikes the day before against three key Iranian nuclear facilities and is preparing to hold direct talks with Iranian officials to address the fallout.
Why It Matters
Trump on Saturday evening announced what he described as a "very successful attack" against three Iranian nuclear sites at Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan. U.S. officials said the attacks caused severe damage, but questions remain about the full extent of the damage and how much of a setback it is for Iran's nuclear program.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the Trump administration for taking an offensive position in the conflict, which Israeli officials have strongly advocated for since Israel first ignited the war on June 13. The Israelis said the U.S. should strike Iran's nuclear facilities because Tehran was getting close to developing a nuclear weapon. Iran denies the charge, saying its nuclear program is for civilian purposes.
Iran vowed to retaliate after Saturday's strikes, accusing the U.S. of crossing "a very big red line" with its decision to pummel the three nuclear sites with 30,000-pound bunker-buster bombs.

Now I guess I know why they're "friendly". Sounds like Traitor helped out Ukraine. Bombing Iran.
Putin wouldn't like that.

(28,536 posts)It's a pretty sad day in the world when Russia is looked upon to broker peace. It's a pretty sad day when our Secretary of State has to ask China to convince Iran not to shut down the Strait of Hormuz.
Folks, the world is telling us that we have become the bad guys. If Iran does retaliate it most likely won't happen in the US, just my opinion. We have made the entire world less safe.

One thing I believe is happening right now, the Ukrainian's ability to survive and their technical advantage of warfare.

(28,464 posts)but theres no shortage of bad actors - both within and outside of - Irans sphere of influence - who may think the time is right to activate some asymmetrical warfare. This time, theyve got a motive for terroristic acts which might actually create sympathy in some quarters. On 9/11, the world joined in sympathy for the losses, but theres no wellspring of worldwide goodwill from which rumpus can draw. Were the bad guys right from day 1.

I'm not very knowledgeable about foreign policy. I've always been one of "those" who just thinks they're gonna do what they're gonna do. BUT...*I'm" not the idiot making decisions about what the country does and does not do. Trump is probably no more knowledgeable than any of us, and he IS the one making decisions.
THAT is my real fear.

Has it been Krasnov's and Putin's plan all along to go nuclear on the world?

Trump tore up the agreement Iran was following, which included inspection, I believe.

(39,556 posts)In more than two dozen interviews and casual talks, the deposed Iraqi leader told FBI questioners that he refused to allowed UN inspectors to re-enter the country because he feared they would reveal to his chief adversary Iran the severely degraded state of Iraq's weapons capability.
He said that during the run-up to the US invasion in March 2003, he kept up his bluster about weapons of mass destruction in order to appear strong in front of Iran. Saddam said he believed Iran intended to annex majority Shia areas of southern Iraq, and saw the country as the greatest threat to Iraq. He said he viewed the other Arab countries in the region as weak and unable to defend against an attack from Iran. He said that he refused to allow UN inspectors to re-enter the country not because he still possessed prohibited weapons of mass destruction (he ordered the stock pile destroyed after the 1991 Persian Gulf war) but because he wanted Iran to believe he did..

(218 posts)Iran likely went to Russia to ask them for a nuclear warhead.
If they get one or more of them from vlad where will they use them?
What will happen next is anyones guess. Irans parliament says it will close the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20% of the worlds oil travels, sending oil prices upward, but that decision can be overruled by the countrys Supreme National Security Council. Irans foreign minister announced today he was on his way to Moscow for urgent talks with Russian president Vladimir Putin. Former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev wrote this afternoon that A number of countries are ready to directly supply Iran with their own nuclear warheads.

(124,857 posts)Russia stands ready to help Iran in the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, but Tehran first needs to articulate its requests, a Kremlin spokesperson said Monday.
Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters at a briefing that the assistance all depends on what Iran needs, according to TASS, Russias state-run news agency.
We have offered our mediation efforts. This is concrete. We have stated our position, which is also a very important form of support for the Iranian side, Peskov continued. Going forward, everything will depend on what Iran needs at this moment.
Peskov noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin plans to meet with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Monday, and the two plan to discuss options for assistance.
