Last body found after boat capsizes on Lake Tahoe in storm, bringing death toll to 8
Source: NPR
The body of the last person missing from a boat that capsized on Lake Tahoe in California during a sudden and powerful weekend thunderstorm was found Monday, bringing the death toll to eight.
Ten people were on board the 27-foot (8-meter) gold Chris-Craft vessel when it flipped Saturday afternoon near D.L. Bliss State Park on the lake's southwest edge as the storm whipped up high waves, U.S. Coast Guard officials said.
Two people were rescued immediately and taken to a hospital in unknown condition. Six bodies were recovered later Saturday and a seventh body was found Sunday evening, according to the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office. Divers searched a section of Lake Tahoe and found the last body Monday afternoon.

The intensity of the thunderstorm surprised even forecasters, who had predicted some rain but nothing like the squall that lashed the southern part of the lake around 3 p.m., said meteorologist Matthew Chyba with the National Weather Service office in Reno, Nevada. Winds topped 35 mph (56 kph) and waves swelled up more than 8 feet (2.5 meters).

(5,736 posts)Anyone older, weaker and with underlying conditions will go much quicker. My question is: what the f6ck are they on that lake with deteriorating weather conditions? Seems way past incompetence and is now criminal negligence.

(15,516 posts)I can recall going out on the deck and watching the cloud come over the house it amazing rate of speed. Usually thunderstorms and such take some time to build. There might have been some faint warnings in the morning that something could happen but this was a Squall that really changed the direction of the wind and created 7 ft waves in a matter of minutes a lot of those boats didn't have time to even get back to the marinas much less doc and get off safely if the waves were as bad as they were.
Yes those people were wearing life jackets. Locals were saying that they could hear on the radio that the emergency responders were talking about people face down with the life jackets on already drowned. So even with a life jacket those waves can fill your face with water before you can even think. And yes the cold water was a factor as well. Lots of people that have lived up here a long time said that this was an anomaly and something that we haven't seen move this fast ever...
Really a tragedy.
People die every year on Lake Tahoe. Lots of times it is preventable, and sometimes it's just inexperience because people think that the water is easy. They don't realize that they're dealing with something so large that it's almost like an inland ocean. Personally, I don't go any deeper than my toes can touch, and I rarely boat. When I had my kayak I never went farther from the shore then I could swim safely because I knew my limits.
(Forgive my typos and mispronunciations and punctuation, I am talk texting and on my phone so I can't really fix anything..)
