Cuomo to stay on New York City mayoral ballot in November on independent line: Source

Source: ABC News

June 27, 2025, 12:45 AM

Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo will stay on the New York City mayoral ballot in November on the independent ballot line that he qualified for, a source close to the campaign confirmed to ABC News.

Cuomo qualified in May to run on the "Fight and Deliver" ballot line in the general election through an independent nominating petition submitted to the New York City Board of Elections, which at the time he said was meant to reach voters disillusioned with the Democratic Party. He would have been allowed to appear on both the Democratic Party and "Fight and Deliver" lines on the general election ballot if he had won the Democratic primary.

CNN first reported on Thursday night that Cuomo, who conceded to state assemblymember Zohran Mamdani in the Democratic primary for New York City mayor on Tuesday, would not withdraw from the independent ballot line but had not yet decided whether to actively campaign in the coming months.

In a speech to supporters Tuesday night, Cuomo told supporters, "Tonight was not our night; tonight was Assemblyman Mamdani's night… He deserved it. He won. We're going to take a look and make some decisions." Candidates have until the end of Friday, June 27 to withdraw from running on an independent ballot line they qualified for, according to the New York State Board of Elections calendar.

The media is intentionally over-focusing on a single city's mayoral race in order to distract from the disastrous 45 Administration's actions.

This is also instructive for using the ranked-choice method for a primary (the 3rd time it has been used there), as other locales have been looking at this.

Wouldn't want any real progressive mayors on the ballot to have a chance to win. That would def ruin all those fancy cocktail parties the wealthy go to and laugh at all of us "poors". Gilded Era Part Deux.

Why do you think the paper would now back Cuomo as an independent?

As a life-long New Yorker and Democrat, I'll happily be voting for for Mr. Mamdani.

The NYT doesn't really have any influence over NY voters anymore.

Here are the mayors of NYC during my lifetime. Kindly highlight which ones were "celebrities."

Robert F. Wagner 1954-1965
John V. Lindsay 1966-1973
Abraham D. Beame 1974-1977. Loser
Edward I. Koch 1978-1989 MAYBE but he really wasn't known until he became mayor
David N. Dinkins 1990-1993 Loser
Rudolph W. Giuliani 1994-2001n. What a mistake!
Michael R. Bloomberg 2002-2013 Strangely, one of the best for his first two terms. Third time wasn't the charm.
Bill de Blasio 2014-2021
Eric L. Adams 2022-

Not much of an A-list.

Bloomberg "bought" his 3rd term because there was a 2-term limit for mayors and he was able to get the Council to change that.

And then he originally ran as a (R), and that last term as an (I).

He basically continued Rudy's stop and frisk and wasted tens of millions on low level Marijuana arrests. He was also worse for tenants than under Rudy Giuliani. And finally Bloomberg put a totally unqualified person at the head of the Dept of Ed who favored Charter Schools.

I don’t see any evidence of that at all. What Mayors are you referring to? Several NYC mayors became celebrities because of the office but were not celebrities in the normal sense.
Robert Wagner
John Lindsay
Abraham Beam
David Dinkins
Edward Koch
Rudy Guiliani
Michael Bloomberg
Bill Deblasio
Adams
(Pardon the massive spelling errors).
These men were all public servants (save Bloomberg financial based media empire billionaire)before they served.
Even Fiorello LaGuardia (the best mayor imho to serve the city) was a professional politician and a hard working people’s lawyer before he served.

only two Republicans I ever did election volunteer work for. I was too young to vote.

Because they were Liberal Republicans, especially in social issues, and the Democrats at those times in thise races were too conservative.
Liberal Republicans became an extinct breed after that.

I never actually voted for a Republican.

Lindsay when he ran for President had a campaign button that said like....

And by making the mayoral race a four-way split (Cuomo, Mamdani, Adams, Sliwa), the future mayor may win with a plurality of just 26% of the vote. (14% of if you consider half the registered voters don't vote when they can.)

And you could end up with an Accidental Mayor, Curtis Sliwa. While I believe he's polling at 7% right now, with such a dilution of non-republican votes as such now, you never know . . . . .

Cuomo does well with older black voters and Mamdani did well with the 44 and under crowd on Tuesday. Cuomo for all his shortcomings is still seen by most voters who would like an alternative to Mamdani as much stronger than Adams so bye bye Eric.

All who aspire to positions of power have, to my mind, something a bit off about them. This feeling is captured by the succinct apocryphal aphorism generally attributed to Plato: "Only those who do not seek power are qualified to hold it."

I do not live in NYC (although did at one point a long time ago) but to me it seems that having a young, committed Democrat as mayor would be a good thing for the city. Much more so than an openly corrupt MAGA guy.

All who care about democracy should unite behind Assemblyman Mamdani. This is, as was the 2024 Presidential Election, really too important to lose to the dictatorship—it would be nice if we could learn from that disaster!

Cuomo should withdraw and place his support behind Mr Mamdani.

Systems prefer the status quo, even if that means supporting a corrupt, disgraced sexually assaulting former governor over a “socialist”.

Cuomo must have gotten the nod from his billionaire backers to stay in, as they are terrified of Mamdani as mayor.

I can't keep getting upset focusing on Trump's actions and the primary victory for Mamdani was a positive distraction. It is a similar feeling as to when Bernie Sanders won the 2020 Nevada Primary. Not a lot of good things happen in politics for me so I'll take the nice distraction.

They did require a minimum of 40% for their ranked choice primary before any need for doing a run-off.
