AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) Members of Teamsters Local 577 at Tyson Foods in Amarillo, the largest beef processing plant in the United States, have overwhelmingly voted to authorize a strike.
The union, representing 3,100 workers in slaughtering and processing, is demanding higher wages and improved benefits.
"We are bargaining with one of the most repulsively greedy and amoral corporations in the entire country. Last year, Tysons CEO made 525 times that of the median worker," said Al Brito, President of Local 577. "This facility is essential to the beef supply chain, but if Tysons corporate leadership doesnt start demonstrating some basic humanity, we will be forced to take action."
The union has filed several unfair labor practice charges against Tyson, alleging violations of labor law. These include accusations of management harassing union stewards, coercing injured employees into dropping claims, illegally interrogating union members, and falsely informing workers that participating in a ULP strike would result in job loss.
