Trump announces 50% tariff on Brazil in retaliation for Bolsonaro trial, trade deficit

Source: CNBC

President Donald Trump said Wednesday the U.S. will slap a 50% tariff on Brazil’s imports, partly in retaliation for the ongoing prosecution of the country’s former president, Jair Bolsonaro.

Trump said in a letter that the new tariff — a massive jump from the 10% rate the U.S. imposed on Brazil in early April — is also being imposed in response to the “very unfair trade relationship” between the two countries.
...
Trump has previously sounded off on Brazil over its treatment of Bolsonaro, a vocal ally of the U.S. president who is standing trial over his role in an alleged coup to overturn his 2022 reelection loss.

Christ, what a dumbass. Remember when the claimed basis for "unfairness" was if the US ran an overall trade deficit with a country?

U.S. goods exports to Brazil in 2024 were $49.7 billion
U.S. goods imports from Brazil in 2024 totaled $42.3 billion
https://ustr.gov/countries-regions/americas/brazil

Also, too:
When goods and services are combined, the surplus reached USD 28.6 billion last year. This represents the third-largest trade surplus for the United States worldwide.
https://www.gov.br/mre/en/contact-us/press-area/press-releases/trade-measures-adopted-by-the-united-states-government-on-april-2-2025-joint-mre-mdic-press-release

Very unfair. Bigly unfair. The unfairest surplus there is.

So he's doing this to illegally interfere in Brazilian justice. This is pure mobster behaviour.

even bolsonaro people,
Anyway they have no use for most US products and what they do receive like tech gear can easily be obtained elsewhere.
No loss for Brazilians at all.

...and explain to him for the umpteenth time that US CONSUMERS pay for the tariffs and NOT the country sending goods. Do it on TV. Obviously, the WH press corps is incapable of doing it. Or they are afraid of getting kicked out of the WH press corps. Or they are all stupid too and don't understand tariffs.

This is all so absurd, being held hostage by a stupid, vengeful clown, and no one in authority willing to stand up.

I really believe that Trump is such a stupid ass clown that Putin installed him in order to

How can a single person, using nothing but political spite, decide who and how much taxes are levied against anyone or anything?

We DO NOT have a king.

WHY can no one stop this garbage?

This has to be near the top. We have no business sticking our nose into legal matters in Brazil. Plus, it is an inappropriate use of the tariff authority with another nation. Why is it taking so long to engage the 25th Amendment? That Amendment was designed to address issues just like this. Nobody can rightfully claim that Trump is of a sound mind.

Justice matters.

to be unreliable every four to eight years to the rest of the world (at least to the democratic world).

The 'system' has failed and cannot be trusted any longer.

This is just insane! His threats this time is solely for the release of Bolsonaro. It has nothing to do with his imaginary theories of the usa getting screwed
