The Democratic National Committee will make a seven-figure investment in voter registration efforts, DNC Chairman Ken Martin said in a Tuesday morning press call attended by Newsweek.
Launching in the electoral battleground states of Arizona and Nevada before rolling out nationally, the effortcalled When We Count"seeks to reduce the Democratic Partys reliance on allied 501(c)(3) nonprofits to register voters, Martin said. Nonprofits are barred from campaigning, which inhibits them from touting the partys platform.
Martin said the left has seceded ground to Republicans in the registration fight for years. The new initiative represents the DNCs largest investment to counter GOP registration gains, and it comes as a critical time as the 2026 midterm elections near and the party aims to break President Donald Trump's grip on Washington.
We've been getting our butts kicked for years now by the Republicans on voter registration, Martin said during the call. What the significance of this launch is, is that we are getting the party committees and hard side actorscandidate campaigns, elected officials, state parties, local party committees and national party committeesback into the voter registration game.

Ummm... it's CEDED, and that's an understatement. The GOP has been spending millions de-registering voters for DECADES.

(22,125 posts)I would think their registration efforts would at least match that amount.

(6,344 posts)As the midterms approach, I think this type of rebuilding and protection is essential to a healthier outcome.

In my GOTV experience we were involved in identifying our voters, maintaining personal contact with them at different junctures in the Election. We put literature in their hands. in the weeks prior to the Election. We went to the polling places and crossed our voters off the list as they cast their votes. Bag em, Tag em, and Drag em was the catch-phrase. Our fairly large school district was able to PASS a Facilities Modernization School Bond with a moderate cushion. School Bond initiatives are usually a Forlorn Hope, as they generally generate low turnout and cant afford to develop a plan.
Im not in favor of TV messaging. I think most people tune them out and targeting usually turns away a lot of voters relative to any expected gain.
Howard Dean was right about a lot of things. The Fifty-States Strategy was a sound concept.
Find your voters. See that they have documentation and back-up WELL before Election Day. Have a legal strategy and volunteers on hand to backstop any tom-foolery, and try to anticipate snags. Thats where the war-chest should be invested. Let the Networks sell Drugs.
