Trump says God supports U.S. cause in Iran war as he threatens wider bombing
Source: Washington Post
As President Donald Trump renews his threats to bomb the entire country of Iran, he is offering a new justification for the costly five-week conflict with no clear end in sight: God himself wants the United States to do it.
Trump said Monday that he believed God supports the United States actions in the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran, a widening conflict that has killed thousands in the Middle East, wounded many more and left 13 U.S. service members dead.
I do, because God is good, Trump said in response to a Washington Post reporters question during a White House news briefing. And God wants to see people taken care of.

When a foreigner resides among you in your land, do not mistreat them. The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the LORD your God.

(10,651 posts)Well, then, get those food stamps flowing again. Extend unemployment benefits. Welcome the stranger? Ever heard of that one, piggy? Quit persecuting and prosecuting immigrants who are following the rules. Let's hike the federal minimum wage to at least $20/hr. Stop the fucking war so that people can be "taken care of." The list is endless.
Any day now I predict that Trump is going to claim he speaks to God and God talks back and tells Trump who to smite and who to draw-and-quarter.
No way the 25th Amendment is going to be exercised here. I think this is going to be up to Congress, and Congress has not shown much spine over the last 15 months.

(26,110 posts)he has often used religion to stir up his followers.
But the Trump administration has several people who are associated with extreme religious views that blend with extremist politics.
People like Hegseth really do believe in religious holy wars. He belongs to an Evangelical denomination that preaches hatred and destruction of enemies in God's name and aligns politically with RW extremism. They define enemies as people who do not agree with them.
Others in the administration are associated with the ultra RW Opus Dei movement in Catholicism.
Are they using Trump's dementia to persuade him to their politico-religious beliefs?

(9,092 posts)They follow the path of darkness, and see Trump as a personification of Satan.
Theirs is a doctrine of hate. That's why they rail against being "woke", and talk about "toxic empathy".
Their hearts are devoid of love.

An increasingly unstable, authoritarian-style leader, whoâs threatening war crimes, is convinced that he enjoys divine support for his military ambitions.

Far from shying away from the idea that there is a religious aspect to the US-Israeli war on Iran, US government leaders are leaning into it, invoking God and promising fire and brimstone for Irans civil society if its leaders do not buckle to US demands.
Even in an administration in which references to Christian nationalism have become routine, Monday offered several examples of the broader phenomenon:
Asked if he believes God supports U.S. actions in Iran, Donald Trump replied, I do, because God is good, because God is good and God wants to see people taken care of. He did not elaborate on who is being taken care of through U.S. bombing campaigns.
At the same news conference, the president claimed he was in a position to convey Gods wishes to the public. God doesnt like whats happening, he added.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth explicitly likened the rescue of a missing American airman shot down over Iran to the resurrection of Jesus Christ. God is good, he concluded.
Trump thanked God for watching over U.S. forces as they searched for a downed American fighter pilot.
Trump: "God was watching us. We were in Easter territory, I guess."

....What the world is confronting, in other words, is an increasingly unstable leader, threatening to commit war crimes, while insisting that he has divine support for his military ambitions.
