Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Tuesday urged members of President Trumps Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment and hand his powers to the vice president over his remarks about wiping out Irans civilization. If the Cabinet is unwilling to take that action, Pelosi said Republicans in the House and Senate should move to end the Iran war.
Donald Trumps instability is more clear and dangerous than ever, Pelosi wrote in a post on social platform X. If the Cabinet is not willing to invoke the 25th Amendment and restore sanity, Republicans must reconvene the Congress to end this war, she added.
Pelosi previously said the 25th Amendment should be invoked against Trump during his first term, touting support from other lawmakers. Her recent comments fall in line with other House Democrats who have warned Trumps plans to bomb infrastructure in Iran and threat to wipe out a whole civilization if the Strait of Hormuz is not reopened would constitute war crimes against civilians if they were carried out.
The 25th Amendment allows the vice president and a majority of the Cabinet to vote and declare a president unable to discharge their powers and duties, and then would give the vice president the active duties of the presidency. If the president objected, it would go to a vote of Congress, which would need a two-thirds majority vote in both the House and Senate to concur.

(55,273 posts)Keep the pressure on Republicans. They will likely do nothing, but the more noise we make, the more Republicans own the consequences. They are being given their last golden opportunity to step back into political reality, and for the good of the country. Will they take it? No. They are under Trump's thumb, inside the MAGA Cult of Lunacy.

How the 25th Amendment would work against Trump amid his Iran belligerence

Section 4 of the amendment gives the vice president and a majority of the Cabinet (or another body designated by Congress) the power to declare that the president is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office. If such a declaration is made here, then Vice President JD Vance would, as the amendment says, immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President.
But that would not end the matter. Section 4, which has never been invoked, goes on to give the president the power to then tell Congress that hes able to serve. In that case, he regains the office unless the vice president and a majority of the Cabinet (or another body designated by Congress) say hes unable to serve. If that happens, then its up to Congress to decide, with the amendment requiring a two-thirds vote in both chambers, that the president is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office. If Congress makes that determination, the vice president continues acting as president; otherwise, the president resumes serving.
So, although the initial action can come from the White House, Congress ultimately has a role to play, and Republicans control both chambers. ....
Therefore, like the 25th Amendment, impeachment leaves the fate of the country to a Republican party and congressional majority that has been subservient to this president.
trump will NOT be removed under the 25th Amendment. Vance and the cabinet will not remove trump and if they did there is no way that two-thirds of both the Senate and House would support this if trump challenges this removal.
There may some political benefit in trying to shame Vance and the cabinet into invoking the 25th Amendment but I believe that Vance and the assholes in trump's cabinet are immune to shame
