LA mayor race flips as socialist beats reality TV star Pratt

(Bloomberg) -- Democratic incumbent Mayor Karen Bass and Democratic City Councilmember Nithya Raman will advance to the runoff in November for Los Angeles mayor, Decision Desk HQ projects. Bass continued to lead the race with 34.68% of the vote, followed by Raman with 27.12% and reality star Spencer Pratt, a Republican, with 26.69%, according to Los Angeles County data.

"We look forward to winning a contest against an opponent who allows encampments near schools and fights against hiring more cops, yet is MIA on saving Hollywood jobs and fighting back when ICE invades LA," Alex Stack, a Bass campaign spokesperson, said in a statement.

Raman, who initially trailed Pratt by 8 percentage points, closed the gap as mail-in ballots were counted over the weekend, a protracted process in California that can drag on for weeks after polls close. "We are encouraged by the latest vote count and remain grateful to the thousands of Angelenos who have powered this campaign," Raman said in a statement on Sunday.

Pre-election surveys showed the majority of LA voters had unfavorable opinions of Bass, who was elected in 2022 pledging to reduce homelessness and promote housing affordability. During her tenure, the city has battled devastating wildfires while also contending with Hollywood job losses, immigration raids under President Donald Trump and pervasive homeless encampments on streets and sidewalks. Pratt, best known as a reality TV villain on shows such as The Hills, grabbed headlines with a strong debate performance in April and a social media presence that included viral videos depicting him as a Batman-like character battling the Democratic establishment in Los Angeles and California.

Pratt is such a flawed candidate, it was frustrating seeing how many softball questions this idiot received. It would have been a cake walk to choose from an array of issues to go after him and they just let him spew BS unchallenged.

It felt like 2015/16 with all the car wreck rubber necking. The media did over Trump.

Any time a Republican loses, scream “rigged election!!!” and try to get it overturned by any means necessary, including violence to stop certification.

Basically, it’ll be J6 all over again, by a factor of several hundred…and I’m far from confident about the outcome.

I must have failed reading comprehension.

The headline reads: LA mayor race flips as socialist beats reality TV star Pratt

Who is the socialist? Who is/who are the Democrat(s)?

Or, more likely, he DOES understand the process, but thinks he can get more mileage from lying and complaining that it’s all rigged.

It’s not uncommon for close races to shift as votes are counted, and there are still outstanding ballots. The top two candidates get to slug it out in the November general election: it looks like Bass is comfortably ahead right now. The “socialist” and the “reality star” are vying for the second spot.

Los Angeles county (yes, I know it's more than just the city of Los Angeles) estimates 500,000 ballots left to be counted as of Friday's report, and mail-in ballots postmarked by 8PM on June 2 will still be processed if they arrive today. The results aren't official until they're certified by the county and the state, and the deadline for that is July 10.

There is no "winner" in a jungle primary. Karen Bass is not guaranteed another term: the top two candidates, regardless of party, will be on the ballot for the general election in November. That election, not this primary, will decide who will be governor, US Representatives, and other elected state officials. not an Angeleno, but I'd rather have Pratt on the ballot and lose decisively than have two Democrats pour gobs of resources into a slugfest until November - same with the other races.
