Roku Inc., the streaming video platform, is in talks to sell itself, people with knowledge of the matter said.
The San Jose, California-based company has been in discussions with at least one US media company about a potential combination, the people said, asking not to be identified because the information is private.
Rokus shares rose as much as 24% in New York trading Friday. They were up 20% to $144.14 at 3:50 p.m., giving the company a market value of more than $21 billion.
No final decisions have been made on a potential sale, and theres no certainty the deliberations will lead to a transaction, the people said. A representative for Roku didnt immediately respond to a request for comment.

(5,650 posts)I have relished the independence of the Roku platform since about 2008 or so. I HATE the corporate consolidation going on under this thieving administration.
Edit: The gift link doesnt work?

(5,650 posts)Begging them not to enshittify the best streaming platform by selling it to a media company. Like they care, but I expressed my thoughts anyway. Thx for the MSN link.

(22,242 posts)If they get one that's way over market value, they would get fired if they didn't take it. Like when Elon bought Twitter. He offered three times what the company was worth. Hard to say no to that.
I love my car, but if you offer me $60k for it, it's yours.

(35,695 posts)what's a good alternative to ROKU ???

(5,650 posts)Its a complete pain in the ass but not as much as Apple TV or Amazon Fire. Just. No. You can cast the laptop image to a tv as well I do this when I travel.

(8,906 posts)I use Roku on all my TV's. I will have to stop using them if they are sold to assholes like the ellisons or murdochs.

(6,145 posts)I think Bluetooth has advanced so you can use newer Bluetooth devices with newer TVs. But I felt the headphone jack was foolproof as you could have the TV's actual volume set real low. That was an important device when we were raising our kid in a tiny apartment. I'm on my third Roku now, last two have been Ultras with the Headphone remote. we rarely use it now that we are in a spacious apartment and.
Alternatives are, AppleTV (set top box), Amazon's Fire streaming devices, the ONN streaming box, which is a straight Google TV (their special media centered android variant). Word is the AppleTV have much more powerful hardware than the others but they are centered to the Apple Ecosystem. I checked and AppleTV has both Android and Windows apps, so it will play fine whether or not you have any Apple stuff.

(2,121 posts)It was super cheap. I just wanted something with android app support. Works, but the remote is a little glitchy at times and slow. But for the price around $20 bucks cant complain
