Patient groups, scientists, bipartisan lawmakers, pharmaceutical companies and more are all sounding alarms over a Trump administration proposal they say would politicize scientific grant funding and undermine Americas biomedical research leadership at a critical time.
The proposed rule from the White House Office of Management and Budget has received almost 342,000 comments, which were due Monday. The agency says it intends to finalize the rule in time for it to take effect Oct. 1. According to one analysis, an overwhelming majority of the comments oppose the changes. The proposed rule would codify many policies the administration attempted through executive order and at the individual agency level.
All discretionary awards from the federal government would have to be reviewed by senior administration officials, who could deny them because they didnt fit the presidents agenda. Existing awards could be cancelled at any time for no apparent reason, with little recourse.
The rule would ban research on diversity, equity and inclusion in addition to gender as grant conditions and would place a broad prohibition on international scientific collaborations. It would also restrict international collaboration at a time when Chinas rapid rise is threatening Americas status as the world leader in biomedical research.

(5,274 posts)... Nosferatu Miller and Bobby Brainworm and feed 'em to the sharks. That's the trifecta; Trump's too stupid to dream up something so Machiavellian as hamstringing medical research to conform to his "agenda".

(1,339 posts)It was laid out in Project 2025. Vought is a zealot nutcase, whose daughter who cystic fibrosis and has benefited directly from the research funded by the NIH. If no one else in this administration is brought to justice, Obergrüppenfuhrer Vought must be. I think there is already a high probability that Miller will face 'frontier justice," maybe even at the hands of one of his own family members.

(14,768 posts)These rules target ALL discretionary grants. It goes WAY beyond dismantling scientific and medical research and driving talent to other countries.
The proposed OMB rule gives political appointees the power to review, deny, or terminate all federal discretionary -- and that includes housing, agriculture, and transportation, -- that do not "demonstrably advance the Presidents policy priorities."
They seek this power because Vought intends to use it.
If allowed to go into effect don't be surprised when OMB immediately terminates ALL discretionary grants. Every single f-ing one.
