Writer E. Jean Carroll finally has the $5 million — plus interest — that a jury ordered President Donald Trump to pay her in damages in one of her two cases against him, after Trump fought the payout for years.

Court records posted Tuesday show a transfer of $5,625,005.48 to Carroll’s legal team took place the day before.

Carroll received the money more than three years after a jury found that the president was liable for sexually abusing her in a Manhattan department store in 1996, and then for defaming her on social media. Trump has repeatedly appealed the judgment to no avail — including petitioning the Supreme Court multiple times — and last week launched a last-ditch attempt to block her from getting the money.

Last Tuesday, his legal team filed a brief requesting that the disbursement of the damages be halted, pointing to his pending request for the Supreme Court to reconsider its refusal to hear his appeal...................

“Three years ago, a unanimous nine-person jury found President Trump liable for sexually assaulting and defaming E. Jean Carroll. Today, we are pleased to report that she has received the damages payment the jury awarded her as a result of that verdict,” said Carroll’s lead attorney, Roberta Kaplan.

In May, after rejecting Trump's last attempt to get the second circuit to reverse the judgment, that court, with Carroll's consent, stayed the release of the payment pending the outcome of a forthcoming petition for certiorari that Trump has until July 28 to file with the supreme court but that won't be dealt with by the court prior to the new session in October.

In addition, notwithstanding the payment of the $5 million judgment, Trump still has a petition to reconsider the denial of certiorari in that case pending at the Supreme Court. Not going to venture a guess as to when SCOTUS will address that petition, but the fact that it didn't act quickly knowing that the money was about to be released would seem to suggest that they aren't likely to grant rehearing -- something that is very rare.

They definitely deserve respectable fees, but it's not unheard of for lawyers at this level to charge as much as $5 or $6K per hour. I mean, do the math.

The schadenfreude may have to be enough. My concern was that all of the stress was going to take her out before she received a nickel. I am elated that Trump has lost now, in a way that is palpable to him. He only understands loss if something is actually taken away from him (i.e., $$$$).

To begin with, personal injury lawyers don't typically charge by the hour, but instead are compensated on a contingent fee basis.

And while there are a very few firms that charge upwards of $4K per hour, that is typically for work on complex cooperate matters or transactions like big mergers.

Roberta Kaplan reportedly charges around $2K per hour at her current firm, Kaplan Martin, which is comparable to what she charged at her previous firm, Kaplan Hecker Fink.

As much of a sleaze-weasel as Trump is, I don't think the court would let him pick America's pocket to satisfy a personal judgement against him.
