"Huge reversal" as ICE suspends most traffic stops after two fatal shootings: report

ICE has suspended traffic stops after two recent fatal shootings in a "huge reversal" of its previous policy, CNN immigration correspondent Priscilla Alvarez reported Tuesday.
The move comes after ICE fatally shot two men this week in Biddeford, Maine, and last week in Houston, Texas, both during vehicle stops.
Immigration agents will continue to conduct arrests for undocumented immigrants, but the guidance now tells them to work with partner agencies and local authorities, Alvarez said.
"This, again, is a significant development. Under pressure to ramp up immigration arrests, ICE agents have been frequently leaning on these vehicle stops, something that they really didn't use to do in the past," Alvarez said.

So, four men total? So, says AI and the lazy editors concur.

The change is temporary and will remain in place while ICE provides additional training to officers on vehicle-stop tactics, the sources said.
The policy shift could have significant operational impacts. Vehicle stops have been a common tactic in ICE enforcement operations under the Trump administration, allowing officers to identify, follow and arrest targeted individuals away from homes or workplaces.

"I want a full, fair, open, transparent investigation of this, not strictly run by the feds," said King, an independent who caucuses with Democrats. "Unfortunately, the feds don't have the credibility today. The people of Maine are not going to accept an investigation that's run by ICE or at the FBI."

Maine Republican Sen. Susan Collins said she had urged DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin to halt the stops.
"While the investigation of the Biddeford shooting is not yet complete, it raises sufficient critical questions that I spoke with DHS Secretary Mullin last night and urged him to cease all non-urgent vehicle stops," Collins said in a statement.
Just six days earlier, a similar situation unfolded in Houston....................
"It's a tragedy for our country that we're going through this process that's based on a phony premise," he said. "The whole premise of this has been [arresting] 'the worst of the worst.' How frequently have we heard that term? 'We're going after the worst of the worst. We're going to take criminals off our streets.' Well, in Maine last winter, they arrested over 200 people. Nineteen of them had criminal records. That means 90% of the people arrested had no criminal records."

(443 posts)for the skepticism and distrust I have? What ever restraint might emerge from ICE will be short-lived. Most certainly S. Miller will not accept anything less than some other tactic that he will devise thats even more effective than traffic stops.
His and ICEs arsenal of policing agenda does not ultimately do stand downs.

(11,076 posts)Bret Kavanaugh was so upset that these car pullovers are called Kavanaugh Stops, that he wrote a clarifying footnote in a later unrelated Supreme Court decision. In that footnote, Kavanaugh asserted that the Fourth Amendment forbids law enforcement from using race or ethnicity as a basis for interior immigration stops.

These stops are illegal. Why are they still doing them?
