They are a national pivot point — and if we treat them as fleeting, we risk missing the most powerful pro-democracy surge this country has seen in a generation.

Let’s start with the numbers.

According to the ACLU, an estimated 5 million Americans have taken to the streets under the banner of “No Kings.” That’s 1.5 percent of the U.S. population — a staggering figure by historical standards. And here’s why that matters: research on nonviolent movements shows that if just 3.5 percent of a population engages in sustained resistance, real political transformation becomes not just possible — but likely.

That tipping point — roughly 12 million people — is within reach. We're nearly halfway there. And more importantly, we’re not marching alone.

1. If you think marching every few weeks is going to bring about the kind of change we need to save democracy in America,

you''re not paying attention to what's going on. While we're marching and protesting, back in Washington, the opposition party is protecting its turf and resorting to its old, status quo ways of doing things, acting as if their rhetoric, that Trump is an existential threat to democracy, was never their message.

Tell me when we have politicians bold enough to risk their own position in order to make an effective move against this fascist dictator, and I'll start paying attention again.
