The weaponized mistreatment of a Milwaukee Muslim leader

It began the morning of March 30. Pounding at Salah Sarsour’s door, 12 Immigration and Custom Enforcement agents came for the 53-year-old Palestinian community leader in Milwaukee who has lived in the United States for 33 years — the lion’s share of that time as a legal permanent resident.

What he was convicted of prior to his arrival to the United States — throwing a Molotov cocktail and rocks at Israeli army forces — wasn’t the basis for his abduction. The U.S. government had been aware of his background and considered it in 2000, 2008, 2010 and 2019 when evaluating and ultimately approving Sarsour’s eligibility for naturalization.

According to the U.S. District Court case file, his detention resulted from Project Esther, the far-right Heritage Foundation report designed “to fight antisemitism.” Being outspoken against Israel’s genocidal obliteration of his homeland in Gaza made Sarsour a target. Days after his name was updated on the Canary Mission website, an anonymously run doxxing site based in Israel, ICE descended on his home.

Over the 80 days he spent in detention at the Clay County Jail in Indiana, Sarsour, a type 2 diabetic, lost more than 30 pounds due to alleged medical neglect, including guards not providing him with medication and sparingly checking his blood-sugar levels.

Additionally, Sarsour, a devout Muslim who serves as president of the largest mosque in Wisconsin, alleges he’d been tormented by guards, who not only denied him a prayer rug but interrupted his prayers. When Sarsour's lawyer attempted to get Sarsour access to a proper diet, the federal government suggested he purchase pork rinds from the jail's commissary.
