I just look for the yellow spot on the bottom, and then thump them. If the thump sounds like thumping your head, its not ripe. If it sounds like your stomach, its mushy. If it sounds like thumping your chest, its just ripe.

We have watermelons going bad in the patch now because we can't eat them all, and friends have said--No more! Chickens and goats love them.

The yellow spot and the thumping. We’re in northeast part of country. And our growing season is coming to a close i love fresh produce especially tomatoes friend.

alas, I must depend on cut up watermelon from the supermarket, at a more expensive price.
