Help! I'm stuck in a nursing home!

I broke my leg a few weeks ago, so now I'm in rehab in a nursing home. I don't know when I'll be able to go back home. (I live alone). I don't mean to sound insensitive, but most of the people on my floor have dementia and I can't find anyone to talk to. I did spot someone who was wearing a shirt with the Obama logo so I started a conversation. He told me all about the Apocalypse. Crap!
The physical therapy is good, but I'd like to hear from people with clear minds. (And don't forget the sympathy. Please feel sorry for me.) Thanks!

It was not fun. Just about everybody on my floor in the nursing home was never going to
get out and the food was God awful. Work your p.t. as hard as you can, get outside and
get some fresh air and nature when you can, and make a plan to get out a.s.a.p..
Send me a D.U. Private Mail if you want.

Getting a tablet and getting back on D.U. was a big help.

BTW you will have people with dementia and others who watch Fox News and their view
of the world can be pretty strange.

Sounds like you are in a tough spot. Are you completely off your feet or can you get around? How long before you get to go home? Will you need to be able to do stairs?

You’re in New Hampshire, according to your profile. I am in Central Maine. We have lots of snow and I bet you do, too. Aside from the lack of conversation, is the place ok? Got books?

I was one of the few inmates, oops I mean residents, who was l lucid.

I chatted with aides and one lady across the hall in the same situation.

Yes and friends by phone and those online.

I really wish you the best. At least your condition will get better and you will be able to get out.

I have a friend in a nursing home who I still visit pretty regularly, although it’s getting more difficult to make myself go. She has hardly any grasp of reality anymore and talks a lot of crazy stuff, although she does know who I am and tells everyone I’m her hiking buddy and we’re going to go hiking again soon, which unfortunately is never going to happen. I see what they get fed. I can’t imagine being stuck there as you are!

I went into one for post-knee replacement rehab once and called a friend the very next day to spring me out of there, it was so bad. Fortunately, my mom came to help me at home.

I can really commiserate with your plight, so I’ll be that senior phone friend for you if you like!

From the aides, to the food delivery ladies, to janitorial staff. "How long have you worked here? Do you have any children? What's the weather like outside? Do you have any plans this weekend? Oh I love your hairstyle! I see you every day and I don't even know your name."

She quickly became the Belle of the Ball and everyone was stopping in to check on her or to just say hello.

Good luck! I hope you're home soon.

Sent you a heart because I feel for you.'
I visited a friend who was in a nursing home after she had her leg amputated. The smell was awful. On some floors it was worse than others. There were some dementia patients but many were mentally sound. Like my friend, they needed PT to get over an injury, amputation, or similar issue.

Do you have access to a rec room?

I broke my leg six years ago, both bones in lower right leg. To my own misery, it never completely healed.; I still have a massive bruise around the break, total numbness in my foot, and an ankle that hurts constantly. Did over two years of therapy, to no avail. I sincerely hope your recovery goes better! I'm sure it's pretty rough not finding others to socialize with, so feel free to come here and "chat"! I hope you'll be able to get out and about soon!
