The big leaves are moosewood, also known as striped maple, acer pensylvanicum. Bet you've got some in your area, probably mountain maple as well. The trees here in Lancaster, PA, are weeks ahead of northern-tier Pennsylvania.
I haven't been to Maine since the late '90s. Maybe this summer. Revisit Baxter SP and Acaidia NP. Stop at Texas Falls and the Mad River in VT on the way.
