RUN FOR SOMETHING: Marissa Roy for Los Angeles City Attorney

Marissa Roy is a lifelong Angeleno who has spent her career fighting for the people. From her start as a Deputy City Attorney* to her current role as a Deputy Attorney General,** Marissa has worked to protect working families, renters, immigrants, and all Californians. Her decision to pursue a career in public service was formedas a result of one vote—when Prop 8 passed and took away marriage equality for LGBTQ+ Californians, including her younger brother. Marissa watched as the San Francisco City Attorney's Office filed the lawsuit to overturn Prop 8. Those city lawyers successfully led the battle for marriage equality that changed the course of so many lives, and put Marissa on the path to serve as a lawyer to the people.

Marissa has dedicated her entire career as an attorney bringing civil rights and consumer protection litigation on behalf of local and state government. At the L.A. City Attorney’s Office, she helped build landmark lawsuits against trucking companies at the Port of Los Angeles, which were misclassifying drivers, and car wash companies that exploited workers—putting tens of thousands of dollars in stolen wages back in workers’ pockets. As outside counsel for the County of Los Angeles, Marissa took on Trump as part of more than a dozen legal actions to protect sanctuary cities, defend students and DACA recipients, and fight the inhumane treatment of immigrants seeking asylum. As a Deputy Attorney General, Marissa now fights to stop predatory practices on behalf of consumers, including standing up for tenants who are wrongfully evicted and suing billion-dollar tech companies that threaten public health and safety.

Marissa is running to transform the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office into the largest public interest law firm in the city. Anywhere people are victimized by businesses engaging in unlawful, unfair, or deceptive conduct, Marissa will step in as City Attorney and be a champion for justice. And as our city faces constant threats from the Trump Administration, Marissa will lead the charge in court so that Los Angeles is one of the most powerful fighters in blocking his illegal agenda and restoring people’s rights.

This is the vital work Marissa knows how to do and the experience she’ll bring as L.A. City Attorney. She’s committed to returning integrity to the office and making its legal cases shaped by the people she’s sworn to protect.
