Supervisor Canepa replacement election set for Nov. 3 ballot

District 5 voters will choose Supervisor David Canepa’s replacement during the Nov. 3 general election after the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to fold the required special election into the regularly scheduled vote.

Canepa, who was elected in June as the next assessor-county clerk-recorder and chief elections officer, will leave the Board of Supervisors Jan. 4, 2027, roughly two years early.

Canepa asked the county attorney to research consolidating the elections “to save the county money” and “with an eye toward increasing voter participation,” he wrote in his deferred resignation letter to County Executive Michael Callagy, who also serves as the clerk of the Board of Supervisors.

The San Mateo County Charter requires a special election because the vacancy will occur before Oct. 16 of the third calendar year of a term, as is the case for Canepa’s supervisor seat.
