Gay Alameda school board prez LaLonde to seek 2-year term
Late last year gay married father Ryan LaLonde became the first LGBTQ person to serve as president of the Alameda Unified School District Board of Education. At the time, he had announced that he would not seek a second four-year term in 2026.
While maintaining that pledge, LaLonde is nonetheless unlikely to be stepping down from his education post when his current term ends in December. Rather, the East Bay politico could very well remain on his elected oversight body through the end of 2028.
The reason being LaLonde this week filed to seek a two-year term on the East Bay school board. Should no one else decide to run for the truncated term by the August 7 filing deadline to do so, then LaLonde will automatically be appointed to serve out the remainder of the term vacated last September by former school board member Meleah Hall.
The school board subsequently appointed Carrie Hahnel to fill the vacancy created by Halls resignation through the end of this year. Instead of running in the fall for the remaining two years left on Halls school board term, Hahnel is expected to run for one of the school boards two full four-year terms up for grabs on the November 3 ballot.
