DC Board of Elections works to roll out ranked choice voting in 2026 Primary Election

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — The DC Board of Elections is set to roll out ranked choice voting in the June 2026 Primary Election.

The change in how residents vote comes after voters overwhelmingly approved Initiative 83 in November 2024. That initiative changed the voting system to a ranked-choice voting system.

“Right now, with our primary system the way it is, we are having folks on the council who are getting in with what I call on a sliver of a sliver of the vote, 24% of primary votes,” said Lisa Rice, CEO and co-founder of Grow Democracy DC, which is behind the initiative. “We want to see people get into office with 50% or more. That’s what ranked choice voting does.”

Under the new system, voters rank up to five candidates for each open position.
