Two special elections will determine control of the Minnesota Senate

Voters on opposite sides of the Twin Cities metro will play a critical role in deciding which party controls the Minnesota Senate by casting ballots in two special elections.

As it stands, the DFL holds a slim 33-32 advantage over Republicans. The outcome of the two special elections could boost Democratic control of the chamber, or could potentially give Republicans the majority if they win both seats.

In District 47, which covers portions of Woodbury and Maplewood, voters will determine who will fill the vacant Senate seat once held by Democratic legislator Nicole Mitchell.

Mitchell resigned from her seat in July after being found guilty of felony burglary for breaking into her stepmother’s home.
