Mamdani Goes to Washington With Key Democrats in Congress Still on the Fence

Zohran Mamdani’s supporters in Congress are calling for the Democratic Party to unite behind its nominee for New York City mayor, but they’re also not pressuring party leaders to endorse him — yet.

Mamdani, who decisively won the Democratic primary in June, heads to Washington Wednesday to attend a breakfast event hosted by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-Queens/The Bronx), who wrote in a post on social media after the primary that Democrats should “unite and rise above our differences to support working people and welcome new, promising leaders.”

“The message is Democratic unity,” Rep. Yvette Clarke (D-Brooklyn) said, echoing Ocasio-Cortez, later adding, “I’m a Democrat, and I’m inclined to support the Democratic candidate.”

But Clarke stopped short of sharing her thoughts on whether House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer or New York Gov. Kathy Hochul — some of the nation’s highest-profile Democrats — should back Mamdani.

If they don't, why worry about it? He just needs the voters of NYC to support him. He's not running for national office. I have yet to see when any mayor of NYC has much impact on other state, much less the nation. The one exception was Rudy Giuliani for a brief period right after 9/11.
