If SNAP benefits run out, where can North Carolinians find food assistance in the Piedmont Triad?

Out of the Garden Project originally aired on FOX8 in 2022.

(WGHP) — Families who rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, better known as SNAP, may have to look for help elsewhere for food assistance come November if the U.S. government shutdown continues.

The government shut down on Oct. 1 after Congress failed to pass a budget for the new fiscal year, cutting off funding for federally funded programs throughout the country, including SNAP.

SNAP benefits will continue through October, but the USDA has directed the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services to pause all November SNAP benefits on Nov. 1. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which facilitates the program, “the well has run dry,” the department announced in a message on the USDA website.

This does not take away or affect any benefits already on EBT cards, and benefits already on EBT cards will still be available to use at any store that accepts SNAP/EBT.
