VA-AG: Suing Trump is key issue in Va.'s Democratic attorney general primary
President Donald Trumps massive cuts to the federal workforce have become the backdrop to the Democratic primary for attorney general in Virginia, with both candidates in the race criticizing Attorney General Jason S. Miyares (R) for not challenging the administrations moves in a state that hosts much of the federal governments infrastructure and nearly 200,000 of its employees.
The two Democrats competing in Tuesdays primary Jerrauld C. Jay Jones, a former state lawmaker from Norfolk who unsuccessfully sought the partys nomination four years ago, and Shannon Taylor, the longtime elected prosecutor in the Richmond suburb of Henrico County both say they would immediately shift course and join several ongoing lawsuits filed by a coalition of Democratic attorneys general across the country.
Jones and Taylor both contend that by sitting out those cases, Miyares has not secured for Virginia the same protections other states have gotten through court rulings and injunctions this year, jeopardizing thousands of jobs and millions of dollars in federal funds. The winner of the Democratic primary will face Miyares, who is running for a second term in Novembers general election.
Miyaress office and campaign did not respond Friday to a request for comment. Last fall on X, he called Jones and Taylor "far-left, anti-police, criminal rights progressives who will make Virginia less safe.
