Over 7,100 ballots cast in Fauquier County for Virginia's redistricting referendum
Fauquier County residents have cast more than 7,100 ballots during the early voting period for Virginia's special election on redistricting, according to the Office of the General Registrar.
Virginia residents are voting on whether the state's constitution should be amended to allow the Virginia General Assembly to adopt new congressional districts. Historically, the districts have been drawn once every 10 years, with the next drawing scheduled for 2031; the amendment would allow for a redrawing before that date under certain circumstances. State Democrats are pushing the redistricting plan to secure more seats during the upcoming 2026 midterm elections.
Early voting opened on March 6 and will close at 5 p.m. on April 18, ahead of Election Day on April 21.
Alex Ables, the general registrar of Fauquier County, told FauquierNow that 5,245 early ballots have been cast in-person, with another 1,899 by mail for a total of 7,144 early ballots. The number represents about 12.3% of the county's 58,118 registered voters.
