OPG signs deal with Port Hope, Ont., to build new large nuclear reactor

Ontario Power Generation has signed a deal with a municipality east of Toronto to build a new, large nuclear reactor.

Energy Minister Stephen Lecce says the proposed nuclear project in Port Hope, Ont., would create 1,700 jobs locally and more than 10,000 jobs across the province.

The OPG submitted its initial project description on Jan. 12 to the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada for approval.

Lecce says the agreement with Port Hope is a critical step in the creation of the world’s largest nuclear station that would power up to 10 million homes.

1. I heard a story about Port Hope and nuclear fuel.

Someone was looking for a house in Port Hope and didn't want it to be near any undiscovered nuclear fuel dump so they bought and old, old house. Turns out it had been owned by a scientist at the nuclear facility and the present day testing equipment showed him coming in the door from work everyday and heading to the bathroom for a shower. They didn't have the same understanding of the dangers of nuclear material back then. This is a story I clearly remember some man telling my family when I was a teen young adult but I can't remember who. It may have been at the time of my brother's graduation from private school there.

2. I had heard similar things about Port Hope.

Kind of like Hanford in Washington State. I was curious about cancer rates in the Port Hope area and found this abstract from a 2013 study that seems to indicate no increase in cancer rates in that region compared to Ontario as a whole.

3. Thanks. I heard the story more than 40 years ago so likely

the scientist was coming home from the nuclear lab in the 1930s, 40s as they didn't buy the home from the scientist i'm pretty sure. I wonder what the cancer rate was for that generation of lab workers. Proper nuclear protocols were not in place, it must have been at the dawn of the industry.
