Hondurans vote in election shadowed by Trump aid threats

There are five presidential candidates on the bill, but the poll is essentially being seen as a three-way race between former defence minister Rixi Moncada of the leftist Libre party, TV host Salvador Nasralla from the centrist Liberals, and businessman Nasry "Tito" Asfura, of the right-wing National Party.

Trump has thrown his support behind Asfura and threatened to cut financial aid to the Central American nation if he does not win.

The most recent opinion poll puts Nasralla in the lead, but with 34% of voters saying they are still undecided, it could be anyone's race.

In another post, Trump wrote that he and Asfura, who is the former mayor of the capital, Tegucigalpa, could "work together to fight the Narcocommunists" and counter drug trafficking.

The irony and hypocrisy of Trump suggesting he would work with Asfura to "counter drug trafficking" from Honduras when he's going to pardon the drug trafficker from Asfura's own party is stratospheric.

1. Trump-backed presidential candidate in Honduras leads vote count narrowly

Yesterday
Dec. 1 (UPI) -- Honduran presidential candidate Nasry "Tito" Asfura -- whom President Donald Trump urged voters to support -- is leading in preliminary results from Sunday's general elections with a slight edge over fellow right-wing candidate Salvador Nasralla.

However, with 55% of polling stations counted, the difference between the two candidates is minimal -- fewer than 3,000 votes -- and could shift at any moment.

According to the National Electoral Council, Asfura leads the race with 40.1% of the vote, while Nasralla has 39.2%, the newspaper El Heraldo reported.

So Moncada is well behind. Just a plurality gets the win - there's no runoff.
