U.S. Navy F/A-18E Super Hornet fighter fell off the side of the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman while the ship was conducting evasive maneuvers in response to incoming Houthi threats earlier today, a U.S. official has told TWZ. A tow tractor that had been moving the aircraft at the time also went over the side in the incident, in which thankfully only a single sailor suffered minor injuries.
CNNs Natasha Bertrand was first to report that the Truman making a hard turn in response to incoming Houthi fire may have been a contributing factor in the incident, citing an unnamed U.S. official. Military.coms Konstantin Toropin also subsequently reported this detail, again citing an anonymous U.S. official.

I am deleting my originally-stated scenario about how the accident occurred. I now realize that the correct version of the incident is that two military personnel were involved. One was in the aircraft and one was on the tow tractor. They both jumped clear before the aircraft and the tow tractor slid off of the deck of the aircraft carrier and into the water. My thank goes to the DUer who pointed out my mistake.

(68,878 posts)Yes I was glad to see no serious injuries.
Once sailors or pilots are in the water it can go badly.

(16,371 posts)Everything I've read so far has indicated that it involved two enlisted personnel, towing the aircraft from the hangar. I haven't seen anything that says that any pilots (or aviators) were involved.

(3,977 posts)Either my memory is cloudy about what I read, or the article I read contained false information. I will try to find it. I now think the scenario which I related is not true. I have my doubts that two pilots were in the aircraft and they somehow ejected, because that does not seem to make sense. The information which you related makes more sense. Thank you for pointing out that I may have posted false information, which is something I never want to do.
Somone else had posted something about pilots being involved, too,, which, along with your post, made me think that maybe it was reported that way somewhere.
