after the war

after the war

after the war beggars lined the streets from corner to corner
the lame the halt the amputees showing off their disabilities
the blind the deaf and the mad wandering in and out of time
selling medals mementoes the same old stories then and there
living in the scarring moments when reason was lost and gone
forgetting the hours of boredom in the world of empty thoughts
bare to the bones in reality scared of the dark and of the light
seething in filth and despair and covered in the rags of futility
sleeping cold and hard on a cold and hard unforgiving tarmac
eating scraps and fighting rats roaches and poverty and dignity
screams and words undefined the poems and books unrhymed
music in the ears ringing and ringing the traumas always near
settled restless in the night dreams waiting for a morning light
hours days weeks months years all mashed into one single life
