when we lost the war

when we lost the war

when we lost the war there was much finger pointing
accusation flew wild and the truth was always ignored
then one day a realization came and we learned to lie
to claim victory and espouse the moments of triumph
as along the avenue of heroes we marched sure footed
flags waved in breezes patriotic brave leaders saluted
bands playing spirited tunes without any hint of shame
white horses pranced ridden by bold bemedaled men
children cheered widows wept as veterans stood stern
black horses pulled black hearses of heroes in repose
the cemetery with marble markers honored the deaths
a weeping man with brilliant features set up a wreath
no one knows those anonymous bones which lie below
who died in fevered fears in gory tatters together alone
