Father of three, grandfather of nine.
A man who lived everyday for his family and friends with great passion and empathy.
It has been almost 5 and 1/2 years since my mom passed at the height of the COVID-19 restrictions and nearly 5 years to the day that he survived a massive stroke with miraculous lack of loss of function or paralysis. He then survived bladder cancer, sepsis (twice), a series of falls that culminated in a broken hip and replacement surgery. In the end, he was afflicted with progresive dementia and kidney failure.
I was able to be with him as he passed and the last words he heard were "I love you dad." That will stay with me the rest of my life as much as his example in how to be a man, a husband, a father and a friend. I miss him already and always will, but in my mind (even if no where else) he reunited with my mother and that image brings a rueful smile to my face.
One last time, with feeling - I love you dad!

(90,835 posts)Just always cherish those memories that will mean more and more as each day passes. And if you find some photos of those happier times, hang em up so everybody can appreciate them.
As I age, there are more and more moments when I find myself thinking thatll be me, some day.

Your post really hit me hard, because, today, March 12th is his birthday. He'd have been 104 today

(7,955 posts)you gave us a wonderful image not only of your father, but of your relationship with him. I lost my Mom last year at New Years. The ache doesn't go away, it seems... but each day makes it a little easier to handle. So does late night "talks with Mom"... when I'm in bed, tossing and turning because of some body ache or pain she and I shared, or worries for the future... especially now. Mom absolutely detested trump. I still say she died when she did because she refused to live under his reign again. So, late at night, when I feel on the edge of despair or a nervous breakdown, I talk it out with Mom. I find being quiet and still after one of these "conversations" I can hear Mom talking back to me, instinctively. May the life and conversations you had with your father fill your days with happiness of those memories, and be the strength you may need at times.
