I have yet to watch this because of what I've heard about it. I'm sure it's excellent, but I'm just not ready for any more trauma right now.

Start with Howel's Moving Castle. If you want sad, then go for the entire Princess Tutu. That one is brilliant, goofy, funny and touching. The sad is beautiful, not crushing.
