James Garner's filmography from the late 1950's through the early 1970's is damn impressive.

I read his autobiography, The Garner Files. He had to make his own way in life from his teenage years on. Earned two Purple Hearts serving in Korea, became a Hollywood superstar but never took himself that seriously. He later took on the Hollywood powers through a long legal action that he eventually won and was awarded a lot of money (never said how much exactly).

Part Cherokee, Garner was proud of his heritage and his roots in Norman, Oklahoma, where he is memorialized with a statue and street name. He used pot from his teen years to his adult life, partly for relieveing pain from his stunt work in film. A proud liberal, Garner took part in the 1963 March on Washington with fellow actors like Marlon Brando and Sidney Poitier.
