Just two senators? If Trump wants Canada to join the U.S., it's going take a lot more - Velshi - MSNBC

Donald Trump’s expansionist vision since returning to office has been rebutted by leaders of Panama, Greenland and Canada. But if his vision of Canada as the 51st state were to become reality, there’s a chance Trump wouldn’t be too happy with the results. - 02/09/2025.

2. That's shortchanging Canada when our smallest states have two senators.

Two senators per province, including Prince Edward Island.

3. Exactly. And I've been to Canada several times and still have friends there who I met at summer camp in Vermont

I'm in Northeastern New York and we share a border with Canada, we get a lot of seasonal Canadian visitors. Since Canada is our closest ally, it's traditional for a new president to make his first "foreign" trip to our closest neighbor, Canada. Instead, TFG made his first foreign trip to Saudi Arabia, likely on Jared's recommendation (which certainly paid off for him). Enough said.

4. I had a French-Canadian great-grandmother, who died long before I was born.

My Ancestry results list numerous possible relatives, mostly in the Montreal area. I've never contacted them. The relationship is separated by about five generations so the connection is tenuous.

Frankly, Justin Trudeau probably doesn't want any visit from drumpf right now with his political future up in the air.

6. That is very cool, I keep meaning to do that. But I want my brother to do it as well since I need a close relative

With a Y chromosome, or so it says. But since I know so many of my relatives, all on my father's side, I already know quite a lot. My Dad's grandparents both came from Ireland and his mother's ancestors were Dutch and came here in the 1600's - her aunt commissioned a book tracing them all the way back, which I have. The mystery is her mother who died when she was 13 and I obviously know little about her. My mother's parents both came from Poland and I grew up knowing both of my grandmothers, my grandfathers both died in the '40s before I was born.

And the Canadian friends who I've seen over the years both come from Quebec. He was a counselor at my summer camp and I really like his wife. They obviously follow American politics and she gave me quite a lecture one time on the dangers of TFG.

And you're right, of all the countries in the world, it took the likes of TFG to alienate our closest ally and neighbor.

7. We knew about my mother's family because we've been lucky enough to stay in contact with them.

That makes it very easy. They were from Luxembourg. The mysteries were on my father's side. Thanks to a cousin who found me through Ancestry, some of those questions have been answered. The cousin, who died four years ago, had done research at the Mormom geneaological library in the Los Angeles area.

She found some information on the French-Canadian side of the family, but then hit a brick wall. So I now know my great-great-grandparents' names. But that's all. I don't know that it's even possible to trace that information anymore. Certainly it would take a long time. I've long been curious because I'm said to look a lot like that great-grandmother. No photos, unfortunately. They were destroyed in the proverbial house fire.

8. Same here with the Irish side of my Dad's family, I know his closest cousins

My grandfather (who died in 1940 when my Dad was only 12) and his closest brother signed up for WWI together and it's my Dad's closest uncle's kids that I know the best - and they know quite a lot, including some of their kids. Some have even been to Ireland and met up with relatives there.

So, like you, I was lucky to have relatives who know quite a lot. And, like you, I'm clueless on my mother's side since, other than her one older cousin who I knew growing up, they're all back in Poland - which both of my grandparents left in 1912. My mother had only one sister and it's her daughter who I'm closest to (we're the only girls), and she's interested in tracing our genealogy on that side of the family, Since I'm the eldest, she's asked me, but all I know is the ship she came over on, the town she came from and that she was a twin whose twin sister died when they were 7, very sad. I once asked her what her sister's name was and she hesitated.

And that's tragic that the photos were destroyed. I'm lucky with my paternal grandmother since there was a photo album that my parents and aunt put together before I was born which I'd give a lot to get my hands on now. I grew up looking at that quite a lot so I know who it is in all those old photos. My closest cousin on that side (my aunt's only child) knows that I'm looking for it, but my fear is that my aunt-by-marriage (the only one of that generation left) has it and she once told me that I couldn't have it because I don't have kids. But her kids all grew up in another state, weren't close to our grandmother like I was and have no interest at all.

5. Canada's healthcare

Trump knows only his rage.

And he has surrounded himself with 'Yes' men and women, he does not consider the ramifications.

Canada does not want our healthcare system; so it will never happen.
Canada does not want a system where health insurers make life and death decisions on treatment.

As always, Velshi makes interesting points.
Trump wants Canada to be considered only 1 state; he does not want to lose his Republican majority.
