33. Clearly the case

These extreme evangelicals tend to be pretty unstable. It is not surprising because their entire existence is anchored on a dogma that is entirely supernatural. In other words, on a daily basis, they have to block out facts from the real world and superimpose supernatural beliefs that can never be confirmed..

Many religious people find a balance between the real world and supernatural. But the more extreme / evangelical, the less rooted in reality. And it is that detachment from reality that allows them to move from a life of trying to help people to a life of killing in the name of the supernatural.

It is, by definition, a mental breakdown. Insanity shielded by the cloak of religion.
