I don't think there's anything sinister about their algorithms. They're just not very sophisticated. The key to using it and being happy with the results is to select bands that aren't too popular. For example, choosing Madness results in lots of pop 80's tunes of all kinds of styles; choosing The Toasters results in ska bands almost exclusively - including Madness. Pandora isn't smart enough to understand why we like what we like, so it offers things that seem to fit. Choosing bands that are popular links Pandora to many other bands you may not like. It's a matter of narrowing your search. If you like The Clash (like I do) select a radio station based on The Cramps or The Ramones.

Algorithms are not a nightmare in my opinion. They are limited, so one needs to know how to use them given their limitations.
