5. i don't know how you can hold the servicepeople responsible for something like this

it's not the sort of mission that is, on its face, illegal.

a president is authorized to order such military strikes under certain conditions, and it's not the rank-and-file to determine if those steps have been met. for all they know, it's authorized under some war on terror or other use of force authorization.

you hold servicepeople responsible if the assignment is blatantly illegal, such as obvious crimes against humanity.
